There are different ways to say hello to a person. It depends on the person you are talking with, and the type of relationship you have and it's different, depending on the region.

If you meet an unknown person, under 20 / or a friend / or just someone at a party or something, you can say:

- Hallo
- Hi
- Hey
- Was geht?
- Alles klar?

If you meet an unknown person older than 20 you can say:

- Hallo
- Guten Tag
- Grüß Gott
- Grüß Dich

If you're talking to a person, that is in an higher position you say:

- Guten Tag
- Grüße Sie

( sometimes you can say hello, but probably not at the first meeting)

to say bye you just can say:

- Tschüss (usually you just say this)
- Mach's gut
- Bis dann
- Bis später
